MUSIC REVIEW: Nomi’s Debut EP sweet talk

Written by Madison Fowler
Small but mighty, emerging artist nomi is carving out her place within the R&B and soul scene alongside giants and dominating artists like SZA, Victoria Monét, and Summer Walker. Within less than a year of her first singles release in late 2025, the singer has quickly risen to fame in the R&B genre and gained a dedicated fan base. On April 24, 2026, the singer released her debut EP, sweet talk, where she continued to show her growth and confidence.
In an Instagram post celebrating the release of her EP, the singer stated that sweet talk was an idea she imagined “3 years ago,” before the release of her music on streaming platforms in 2025: “it was something i started just playing around in the studio with @tteeeejjj when he played me a beat he just finished working on with @8eenmusic and from the moment i heard it, it wasn’t hard to figure out the melody, the words literally just came to me.”
Although the EP only spans four tracks, sweet talk packs a poetic punch as nomi explores the complexities of love and heartbreak. Nomi opens the EP with “sweet talk,” a song that questions the reality of her former partner moving on. Nomi’s smooth and honey-like vocals slide over the tightness of the beat, making the track feel warm. The grooviness of the bass throughout the song sits nicely and works to complement the beat of the drums. Towards the end of the track, the instrumentals catapult into a funky and catchy guitar riff, intercepted by nomi’s vocals singing “talk.”
“badman” is a slower and more soul-driven song compared to “sweet talk.” In this retro-esque track, the singer talks of a former partner, claiming that he is “not a good guy” but rather “just a badman.” nomi’s vocals are light and airy yet crisp as the sparse guitar riffs, drums, and trumpets clinch the song together. On “cellophane,” nomi sings about moving on from a former partner. “Move along now / Nothing more to prove,” she sings, “I’m finally sober I can see right through you.” The song is drum-driven, and the singer’s layered vocals in the track create a moody atmosphere.
nomi closes off her EP with “raindance.” This track was one of the first songs the singer had ever written, yet it doesn’t feel this way as she hones a natural gift for sweet, catchy, and personal storytelling through her lyrics. The track is more laid-back and mellow than the other tracks on the EP, yet it holds its place among them. The instrumentals are slow and melancholic, with their violins and nomi adds to this feeling with her smooth and hypnotic vocals, as she navigates the emotional turmoil at the end of a relationship.
sweet talk is a musically cohesive yet experimental debut EP from nomi. As the singer continues to create and release new music, she will continue to surpass herself. I’m excited for what the R&B singer will release next. The future for the R&B and soul genre is bright, and nomi is its rising star.
