Concert Review: The Two Lips at The Roxy

Written By Madison Fowler
After releasing their debut EP, girl, c’mon! last year in September, dream-pop duo The Two Lips embarked on their Kiss and Tell Tour, which spanned over nine dates across the U.S. and Canada. On two of those dates, the duo would be making their Coachella debut on the Sonora tent stage. Although fans were eager to attend the tour, some were hoping for an LA stop on the tour, in addition to the Coachella music festival.
As if predicting their fans’ pleas, the duo announced that they would be playing at The Roxy Theatre on April 15. Luckily for me, I was able to snag myself a ticket as soon as they went on sale.
Although doors opened at 7:00 p.m., I arrived at the venue around 4:30 p.m. to try and get a good spot, and to my surprise, there were only about four people ahead of me. It was nothing like many of the videos I see online where fans will sometimes wait hours, or even days, to secure a front-row spot for shows (my utmost respect goes out to the brave souls who do camp out for shows!). Around 5:30 p.m., more fans started to get ready and arrived at the venue. What made for a sweet surprise was when the duo arrived at the venue and quickly waved at the large group of us waiting for the doors.
At 7:00 p.m., fans began to flood into the venue. Because I ended up arriving at the venue pretty early, I was able to secure a spot right near the middle of the stage. As people began to trickle in and buy merchandise, I had time to view the venue in its entirety before it was completely filled with screaming fans. The Roxy is probably, if not the smallest venue I have ever been to, holding around 500 people. Although some smaller venues are not everyone’s cup of tea because they limit the availability of tickets, they make for a very intimate atmosphere between fans and the artist.
At 8:00 p.m., Temachii, a dream-pop and shoegaze artist, opened the show. The singer showed off her absolutely ethereal vocals with songs such as “soft n sweet,” “moon girl,” and “may you never forget me.” The crowd also had the pleasure of listening to an unreleased song the singer played for us called “still the only one.” Temachii’s soft vocals paired with the ethereal and hazy sounds of the guitar create a sense of comforting calmness as if you are lying in a field of flowers looking up as the sky fades to shades of pink, orange, and purple hues. I highly recommend checking out Temachii if you are a fan of artists like the Cocteau Twins, Men I Trust, and Mazzy Star.
With the first bright and crisp notes of “blossom” echoing through the venue, the curtains began to rise, and The Two Lips officially took the stage at 9:00 p.m. “Blossom” was a perfect way to open the show, as the indie-pop song touches on themes of growth, connection, and romance. Although the song acts as an anthem for the blossoming of new relationships, I couldn’t help but relate it to the duo’s musical journey, watching them “blossom” into full-fledged pop artists taking on Coachella stages.
While the duo played some of their older songs, such as “SICK!” and “do you even know?,” their setlist consisted of newer songs off their debut, such as “enemy” and “cup of tea.” One of the songs that hyped up the crowd the most was “it’s complicated,” an early-2000s coming-of-age movie soundtrack-inspired song that details the highs and lows of romantic relationships. The crisp and upbeat drum solo towards the end of the song truly turned the concert into a 2000s rock experience.
Although not on the written setlist, the duo played one of my favorite songs, “happy for me.” Although short, it was a highly intimate song, as the band left the stage, leaving the duo and the crowd alone together. With just an omnichord and their enriching vocals, the duo provided a magical and stripped-down experience as they reflected on their dreams coming true.
As if the night couldn’t get any better, the duo surprised the crowd with a new unreleased song called “in every life.” They teased that they would be releasing the song “very soon” and claimed that this song was part of their “experimental era.” I’ll try not to spoil anything here, but the song takes on a more upbeat and pop direction than their previous songs. After this, they continued to spoil the crowd with their rendition of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.”
Towards the end of the show, the duo performed their new singles “kiss goodbye” and “brb.” It was such a treat to see these yacht dream pop songs come to life on the stage as the duo performed some of the cutest synchronized dances as the instrumentals took over.
Ending off the night on a sweet yet nostalgic note, the duo performed their hit single “still love you (todavía)” and “favorite apple,” which elicited some of the loudest screams.
It’s been an absolute honor to watch The Two Lips grow as artists from their first single, “do you even know,” back in 2023. They have continued to expand their audience and are playing on bigger stages, even taking the stage at Coachella, one of the biggest and most famous music festivals in the world. Watching them play in a smaller venue like The Roxy was such a privilege, reminding me of how far the duo has come. active artists.
